Monika Jaymes

Monika JaymesHello all. I’m so excited to share this photo with all of you. It’s of a great musician based in North Carolina named Monika Jaymes. She is an amazing singer/ song writer. This is one of those great moments that happens at the last minute. I got a message from Monika on Monday that she needed to have some pictures taken ASAP. We made an appointment for that Wednesday to meet in downtown Raleigh. No real set plan, just a general idea of what she needed, and what she was looking for. BTW this shot was not what was needed. She needed a certain look and style for a show poster that she would be headlining at the OutRaleigh Festival. We walked all over the warehouse district and got some amazing “urban grunge” type shots when Monika mentioned that The Berkeley Cafe was open for lunch. So we got up the nerve to ask if we could use the stage and shoot a few pics. The staff that was on duty were very gracious and just let us set up and shoot for a little while. And as you can see great things happened.

As for the set up for this. I had an SB-600 flash remotely triggered off to camera right with a Westcott Micro Apollo Light Modifier attached to the flash to soften it up and that’s about it. One light, lots of drama. I’m always amazed at what you can do with just one light.

As for post it’s pretty straight forward. Desaturate, boost contrast, tweak white balance a little and added a little black.

Well I hope you all enjoy the picture as much as I do. Please feel free to share and leave a comment below. Thank You.

Excellent picture. Good contrast. Get a by-line on the poster for publicity.
