Elegant Curves

This is another example of the need for a steady tripod and a remote trigger for your camera. The tripod I use is the Manfrotto 3021B Pro with a Manfrotto 486RC2 Ballhead. The wonderful thing about this Tripod is the ability to remove the center post and reinsert it parallel to the ground. This allows you to really get in really close to a subject when shooting macro shots. giving you the ability to really fill the frame with the subject with no need to crop later on. Also the legs will adjust all the way flat on the ground for those really low close up shots. Plus the Ballhead allows for quick and precise adjustments when composing you shots.
This again was shot with the Canon EFS-60mm Macro lens on a Canon 20d body at f4 and 1/125 of a second. I usually shoot with the battery grip on the camera to make shooting pictures in portrait mode a lot easier. But when shooting macro shots I find that the camera tends to vibrate a little more than I like with it on. So I never shoot with the grip when doing any type of macro shooting.
Getting the focus right on a shot this close can only be done in manual focus mode. This takes some getting used to but, without it your lens will tend to hunt when trying to focus. Plus it gives you better control of your focus point because you are dealing with really shallow depth of field. Even when you close down the aperture all the way to f22 you are still dealing with very shallow depth of field this close to your subject. So you want to make sure your point of focus is correct so you can control exactly what is in focus in the shot. This was shot pretty much wide open to get the mood I was looking for. My concern was getting the graceful curves of the flower and the wonderful contrast of color between the foreground and the background as apposed to getting lots of detail in the flower.

See how well that EFS-60mm macro works and I'm glad to see you finally found a use for that Stofen light softener.
